Friday afternoon during nap time I started a romper for Des. I’ve had this seahorse fabric by Heather Ross for a while now, and I have no idea why I never thought to make a romper out of it! It’s the perfect little outfit for Des to wear in this already humid summer weather.
This is the second time I’ve made a baby boy romper. The first time I followed a pattern, but I had to alter the pattern from a size 6 months to an 18 months. It did not go well… I ended up wasting so much fabric trying to resize it, and when I finally got the right size, I put the button holes on the wrong shoulder flap. Basically, he had to wear the romper backwards. What a mess! This time around went so much smoother!
I had to resize this one a little too, since it ended up being a little too wide. All I had to do was make the seam allowance along the side seams larger. I’m sure there’s probably a more specific way to do that, but it seemed to work okay. It didn’t need to be taken in a massive amount.
The one other thing that needed to be altered was the neckline, but I wasn’t sure how to make it smaller without messing up the shoulder straps. You can tell the neckline is a little large, which causes the straps to fall off his shoulders a little. He can still wear it comfortably without the straps falling completely off, so I’m not super worried about it. I’ll just need to figure out how to change it for next time.
We love how it turned it out! He loves the little seahorses on it and had fun “helping” me after he woke up from his nap. Who knew that watching a machine put a button hole in could be so interesting! Thankfully, I put them on the right side this time…
