How are you decorating your table for the holidays? Cloth napkins are a fun way to add something extra to your table. You can make them super dressy or casual with a vintage feel. I saw this fabric in the store the other day and couldn’t pass it up! Something about those shiny gold zigzags that shout out to my Cuban roots…
Cloth napkins are one of the easiest things to make and once you make one, it’s just as easy to make 50! (Just ask my mom who made around 100 for my brother’s wedding!)
This chevron fabric was just asking for some Sashiko stitching! Isn’t that Sashiko stitch just the sweetest! If you don’t have a Sashiko, you can do the stitching by hand or even try a long running stitch on your sewing machine.
Here’s what you need to make 2 napkins:
– 3/4 yard of fabric of your choice (Go shiny!)
– coordinating thread
– any embellishments you wish to add
Instructions:
Step 1 – Cut out 2 squares that measure 19.5 by 19.5 inches.
Step 2 – Fold and press each corner in 1.5 inches towards the wrong side of your fabric.
Step 3 – Cut 3/4 inch off each tip of your triangles.
Step 4 – Turn in and press each side of your fabric 1/5 inch towards the wrong side.
Step 5 – Turn in each side 1/5 inch again towards the wrong side until the edges of your folds meet in the corners.
Step 6 – Unfold each corner and find the horizontal crease in each corner.
Fold that crease in half with right sides facing and sew from the folded edge to 1/2 inch before the raw edge.
Turn your corner inside out and make sure your corners are pointy. You may need to use a pencil eraser or something similar to poke your corners out. Re-tuck each side of your napkin like you did before (1.5 inch and then 1.5 inch again).
Step 7 – After all your sides are pinned, sew 1/8 inch from the inside edge of each side of your napkin.
Step 8 – Go decorate your table!
Finished size: 17.5 x 17.5 inches
