Modern Baby Girl Quilt

Two things that I absolutely love are stripes and chambray.  They’re perfect for girls, boys, kids, adults, and they go with basically everything!  I wanted to make a modern baby girl quilt that would never go out of style; something that Kate could use in her room as a baby, but also fold up across the foot of her bed as a teenager and hopefully take with her to college. (That’s really way too far away for this mama to think about though…)

I ended up choosing several different greys and this lovely light pink (apricot, actually) Dear Stella fabric.  Of course, I had to throw in something from Carolyn Friedlander (Crosshatch in Grey from her Widescreen collection) and the super great Add it Up fabric in bone from Cotton and Steel.

I loved the idea of piecing huge squares together instead of smaller squares to create a less traditional look.  The long hand stitched rows gave the quilt such a cozy feel because when washed, the quilt batting had more room to “fluff up” between the fabric layers.  This was my first time to hand stitch a quilt, and I expected it to take forever, but it ended up being such a relaxing project.  It was just what I needed while I waited for baby girl to arrive.  It kept my hands busy, but didn’t take too much brain power!

The soft, neutral look of the quilt is perfect.  This is a pattern that you could easily alter to create a much larger quilt that would be great for a bedspread.  The finished size of this quilt is about 40 inches by 50 inches.

This modern baby girl quilt is perfect for baby Kate’s room/guest room!  It lays across the foot of the bed and works great as a play mat for baby girl too!
