Blue and Gold Woodland Baby Boy Quilt

You know those projects where the more you work on it and the more you look at it, you end up having second thoughts about how good it looks?  Well, this was NOT one of those projects!  The more I worked on this quilt, the more I loved it and (not so) secretly wanted to keep it for myself!

The blue and gold fabrics look so great together, and the fact that the gold stars actually shimmered a little… Man, did they totally call out to my Cuban side!  I mean seriously, gold and sparkles mixed with stripes… Yes, please!

I love the combination of the woodland elements with the timeless stripes and plaids. (Oh, and don’t forget the sparkling stars!)  Such a great quilt for a baby boy, but also something that won’t look childish when his room transitions into a big bog room.

The finished size is about 40 inches by 50 inches.  (I actually forgot to measure it when it was completely finished, but the width is only the width of the back fabric which was 42 inches before I trimmed it about .5 inch on each side. )  The fabrics were so fun to pick out!  I purchased them from Hawthorne Threads, and one of the things I love about their site is how easy it is to choose coordinating fabrics without actually seeing them in person.

If you select a fabric, they give you a color chart of fabrics that will coordinate with that specific fabric.  They do a great job of selecting the same shade of each color.  For example, I knew I wanted to use blue fabric with gold arrows, so they gave me suggestions of fabrics that contained that same shade of blue.  Totally makes shopping for fabrics online so much easier!

I didn’t use a pattern for this quilt or plan where I was going to put what square.  I bought .5 yard of each fabric (except I bought 1.5 yards of the binding and backing fabric) and cut 5.5 inch squares. I picked out the fabric order for the first row and sewed each square together with a .25 seam allowance and continued doing that until all my rows were sewn together.  Super quick and easy!
