Repurposed Sweater Blanket

Shopping when pregnant just isn’t as much fun as shopping while not pregnant… Unless, I look for clothes I can cut up to make into something else!  I loved how cozy these sweaters from Loft looked, but I knew I couldn’t pull off the cropped sweater look these days.  Plus, I’d probably sweat to death in anything resembling a sweater right now.  These sweaters were super on sale, so I bought two of them!  I didn’t have the heart to tell the lady at the checkout I was planning to cut up these beauties and make a repurposed sweater blanket… repurposed sweater blanket (13 of 1)

Before cutting the sweaters, I sewed a line of stitching slightly past where I wanted to cut just to make sure it wouldn’t unravel while I pieced the squares together.  Then, I cut up each sweater into two squares and serged the edges of each square.

I sewed all four squares together to form a larger square and trimmed the four sides to make them even.

After I sewed the four squares together, I used some scraps of chambray fabric to make the binding around the edges.  I wanted the binding to look slightly gathered, so I sewed along the top edge of the binding with a long gathering stitch before I attached it to the blanket.  I didn’t actually pull the bobbin thread to gather the binding before attaching it, but because the chambray is such a light weight fabric, it scrunched up just enough as I was sewing the gathering stitches.

I love how sweet the blanket turned out!  I had my doubts that it would work out the way I planned, but then again, I really didn’t do much planning.  Just started cutting and made it up as I went.   It was one of those “let’s see what happens” projects.  Turns out, it’s adorable!
